The Princess C48: Why This British Sport Cruiser Has My Attention

Princess Yachts enters the luxury outboard market with the all-new C48—available in Open (outboard) and Deck (inboard) versions. Here is why this British sport cruiser is set to disrupt the segment.

The luxury outboard market is about to get a serious shake-up. Princess Yachts — a brand synonymous with British craftsmanship and refined performance — is stepping into outboard territory with the all-new C48, and I think it's going to turn heads from Palm Beach to Newport.

For decades, Princess has built its reputation on inboard-powered luxury. The V-Class, the Y-Class, the flagship X-Class — all driven by shafts, pods, or jets. So when they announced the C-Class, an entirely new line built around outboard power, it signaled a real shift in how Princess sees the future of cruising.

Two Versions, One Vision

The C48 launches in two configurations: the C48 Open and the C48 Deck.

The Open is the outboard model — a triple-engine setup with Mercury Verado V10 400hp as standard, pushing her to around 40 knots. Upgrade to the optional triple Mercury V12 600hp package and you're looking at a top speed north of 50 knots. That kind of performance in a 48-footer with Princess-level fit and finish is genuinely exciting.

The Deck is the inboard variant, powered by twin Volvo Penta D6-480 diesels through IPS drives. She tops out around 34 knots — still plenty of speed — but the real story here is range, efficiency, and that silky-smooth IPS docking experience.

Both models share the same Bernard Olesinski-designed deep-V hull. At 48 feet 11 inches LOA with a 13-foot 5-inch beam, she carries 396 gallons of fuel and offers a surprisingly spacious layout for her size.

Why This Matters for the Market

The luxury outboard segment has been dominated by American builders — Pursuit, Boston Whaler, Valhalla, and others have owned this space. But none of them bring what Princess brings: that unmistakable European design sensibility, decades of yacht-building heritage, and a level of interior craftsmanship that's hard to match at any price point.

The C48 Open is going after buyers who want outboard convenience — easy maintenance, shallow draft, and raw speed — without sacrificing the refinement they expect from a proper yacht. Think teak-laid swim platforms, handcrafted cabinetry, and a helm station that feels more like a cockpit than a console.

The Details That Matter

Below the main deck, the C48 features a full-beam owner's cabin, a convertible guest cabin, and a head with separate shower. The galley is up in the main saloon where it belongs, with panoramic glazing that floods the space with natural light.

On the Open model, the aft cockpit is massive — a proper entertaining space with wet bar, seating, and direct access to the swim platform. Fold down the bulwark gates and you've essentially doubled your usable outdoor space.

The helm position on both models gets Princess's latest integrated glass cockpit with digital switching and joystick control. On the Open, the triple outboard setup means joystick docking comes standard — something that used to be exclusive to pod-drive boats.

Performance Breakdown

Here's how the numbers stack up:

C48 Open (Outboard): Triple Mercury Verado V10 400hp — approximately 40 knots top speed, cruising in the low 30s. Optional triple Mercury V12 600hp — over 50 knots top speed with cruising speeds in the high 30s.

C48 Deck (Inboard): Twin Volvo Penta D6-480 IPS — approximately 34 knots top speed, cruising around 27 knots with superior fuel efficiency and range.

Both models ride on that proven Olesinski hull, which Princess has refined over thousands of sea miles. Expect a dry, predictable ride even when conditions get sporty.

Our Build Is Coming This October

I'm particularly excited about this model because we have a C48 build being completed this October 2026. Seeing this boat come together has only reinforced my belief that Princess has nailed the brief with the C-Class. The quality of construction, the attention to detail in every compartment, and the way she performs on the water — it's everything you'd expect from Princess, now in a package that competes directly with the best outboard sportboats on the market.

If you're interested in the C48 — whether it's this build or a future allocation — I'd love to talk through the options with you. Reach out to me directly or connect with your HMY broker. As the exclusive Princess dealer on the east coast of Florida up through Charleston, South Carolina, HMY Yacht Sales is your go-to resource for everything Princess, from factory allocations to pre-owned inventory.

The Bottom Line

The Princess C48 isn't just another boat in the lineup — it's Princess planting a flag in outboard territory and saying, "We can do this better." Based on what I've seen so far, they might be right.

Whether you're coming from the outboard world and want more refinement, or you're a traditional Princess owner curious about the convenience of outboards, the C48 deserves a serious look. This is the kind of boat that could redefine what buyers expect from a luxury sportboat under 50 feet.
